U20s V Blackrock at Home

Yesterday, Sunday 3rd Nov, at Ashbrook, Coolmine U20’s hosted Balckrock U20’s in the 3rd Round of the JP Flanagan League. With great supporting attendance, this fixture proved to be very exciting, scores alternated between both teams and ensured that it would go down to the wire.

In the early stages the Blackrock defence was strong and resolute but Coolmine managed to score the 1st try. The big and strong pack Blackrock responded with a try and kicked on again for another score and led the 7-12 at halftime.

The early stages of the second saw Blackrock attacking through mauls close to the Coolmine line and pull ahead with another try. The U20’s were not deterred and through hard work worked responded with two tries of their own.

Blackrock came again but were repulsed by strong U20’s defence and only managed a three points from a penalty kick. Blackrock followed this up with another try to bring the score to 19 -32 in there favour.

It seemed that the game was slipping away from Coolmine, however through shear hard work, determination and skill Coolmine gained more control. Heading in to the final 10 minutes the Coolmine forwards drove on hard again and through some swift handling the backs crossed under the posts to bring the deficit back to 6 points.

With two minutes remaining, Coolmine received the kick off ball inside their own 20 meter line and after a few carries again, by the ever hardworking  forwards, the ball was moved wide, tackles were broken and with a burst of speed the Coolmine backs were over the try line, touching down under the posts. The last act was the successful conversion. This final try can be viewed here

Final Score: Coolmine U20’s 33 – 32 Blackrock U20’s.

While it was not perfect performance by either side, it was a tough, hard and committed game and it is a compliment that neither side really deserved to loose. For Blackrock they got at least 2 points from the game. For Coolmine U20’s, they have now recorded three straight 5 point wins and sit joint top of league.

This U20’s Squad continue to demonstrate amazing character, massive determination and a willingness to keep just keep on playing. It is hoped that for future games they will reflect and draw on this win. What a game…to be there was a privilege!
